A castle steeped in history

Built in the 13th century, Montbel Castle belonged to the powerful Montbel family, who controlled a large part of the territory between Savoie and Dauphiné. Its strategic location allowed them to monitor the routes linking the Alpine valleys.
Over time, the castle was gradually abandoned and lost its defensive role, leaving behind ruins now fully integrated into the natural landscape. Despite this, you can still clearly identify:

  • sections of ancient walls,
  • the remains of towers,
  • and the overall layout of the former fortress.

An accessible walk with panoramic views

The site is reached via an easy hiking trail, starting from the village or nearby areas. The ascent is gradual and suitable for most walkers, including families (with children used to walking).

  • peaceful and unspoilt atmosphere,
  • open views over the Entremonts valley,
  • a sense of timeless isolation.

Where heritage meets nature

Montbel Castle is also a great example of heritage blending naturally with its environment. The site remains untouched by intrusive development: no modern structures, no crowds — just stone, forest and terrain.

It is particularly appreciated by:

  • hiking enthusiasts,
  • local history lovers,
  • photographers (especially for the beautiful evening light).

An ideal outing from Le Passage

From Le Passage, Montbel Castle can be reached in just a few minutes by car, or directly on foot depending on your accommodation and route. It’s a perfect outing:

  • for a relaxed half-day,
  • as part of a longer hike,
  • or as a cultural break during your stay in Chartreuse.
